Location, Area and Land Use of Central Dry Zone of Myanmar

Depending on its rainfall and temperature, the boundary of the central dry zone region of Myanmar is generally defined between the North latitudes 19° 20′ to 22° 50′ and East longitudes 93°40′ to 96° 30′. This region is ringed in by Kachin State to the North, Shan State to the East, Chin State to the West, and Bago Region and Nay Pyi Taw Union Territory to the South. In other words, Shwebo and Katha Districts are located to its North, Shan plateau to its East, Rakhine Yoma to its West and Pyay District to its South.

In terms of area, the longest length of the region from south to north is approximately 250 miles (402.3 km) while the widest length from east to west is approximately 120 miles (193.1 km). Considering not only natural settings but also for effective administration, the central dry zone of Myanmar (the working area of dryzone greening department) currently covers a total area of 19.53 million acres (7903510.6 ha) with 53 townships under 13 districts and 3 regions.
